Cincinnati Fountain Square
We love going to Cincinnati Fountain Square. Over the years it has received several facelifts, but the famed fountain has always remained the focal point.
Originally, the square was a large island in the middle of 5th Street with buildings to the north and south, much like nearby Piatt Park. The bronze sculpture is named Genius of Water, and the artist is Ferdinand von Miller of Munich,Germany. It was commissioned by Henry Probasco in honor of Tyler Davidson, and made its first appearance in Cincinnati in 1871, replacing a butcher shop.
The first major reconstruction of Fountain Square was in 1971, when the Square became a square. The fountain was restored and the square further redesigned about a decade ago.
Today Cincinnati Fountain Square serves as a popular meeting place, a business lunch location, and a venue for special events, among them Taste of Cincinnati and Oktoberfest.
The ice skating rink, which is as large as the famed ice rink at Rockefeller Plaza in New York, will be open soon!
